Gr 6-9-This well-researched and well-documented biography provides keen insight into the life of this extraordinary woman. Ford's account follows Keller from birth, through the fever that left her blind and deaf, and the arrival of Annie Sullivan, who became Keller's lifelong teacher and friend. Ford recounts how Sullivan taught Keller manual sign language, how to read Braille, write, do arithmetic, and how to speak. How she eventually earned a bachelor's degree from Radcliffe College, wrote books, spoke out for causes, and raised funds for organizations are presented in clear, concise prose that moves swiftly, but provides sufficient detail and depth. The crisp design and evenly spaced black-and-white photographs let the text shine. A welcome research tool and a readable narrative.-Kristen Oravec, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Strongsville, OH
