Grade 6-9-Merging personal accounts with research data and discussion, this title addresses how teens feel about the way they look, the impact of society and advertisers, and maintaining a healthy body image. Anorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, and body dysmorphic disorder are all briefly covered, and bulleted lists of their warning signs are included. The book also considers issues that most commonly affect males such as steroids and the relatively newly labeled disorder of "muscle dysmorphia." Defined as the "belief that one's muscles are too small," this disorder is not yet recognized by the American Psychiatric Association. Chapter subtitles in bold type keep the topics easy to find. While there are many books available on this subject, few mention the new body and muscle dysmorphic disorders.
