Gr. 8-11. Titles in the Understanding Literature series combine biographical information with an introduction to literary analysis. Using short, brisk sentences, Crayton first provides an overview of Morrison's work, defining a few basic literary terms, such as irony and metaphor. Subsequent chapters include a summary of Morrison's life and a more in-depth study of several of her novels. Crayton occasionally oversimplifies: "Slaves were not allowed to talk with each other." Even so, this is a useful survey of Morrison's work that will be useful to students beginning to think and write critically about literature. Occasional fact boxes and engravings extend the discussion of slavery that is addressed in many of Morrison's books. Sporadic black-and-white photos of the author, a time line of her life, notes, and suggestions for further reading round out this sturdy entry. Books on George Orwell, Herman Melville, Ernest Hemingway, and Arthur Miller are also now available. Gillian Engberg
