Exploring two of her best-known books, including A Wrinkle in Time, the life and inspirations of this celebrated writer are presented in relation to topics she covered that caused such a stir in their time along with a review of censorship and the banned book movement.

This title in the Authors of Banned Books series uses the attacks on one classic yet frequently challenged book, L’Engle’s 1963 Newbery Medal winner, A Wrinkle in Time, to draw teens into a dynamic discussion of general censorship history and issues. McClellan describes the objections of the challengers, frequently Christian fundamentalists citing the book’s “satanic content,” and counters them with comments from the other side, including numerous statements from L’Engle herself as well as from ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom. Readers will also find a succinct biography of L’Engle (although an editor’s note explains that the book went to press after L’Engle’s death on Sept. 6, 2007), occasional photos, a chapter of literary analysis, and summaries of both Wrinkle and L’Engle’s Many Waters (1986). The extensive back matter includes detailed chapter notes, bibliography, and questions for those who want to pursue the discussion. Grades 8-12. --Hazel Rochman
