Gr. 4-7. Like other MyReportLinks.com books, these titles in the Presidents series combine basic, concise text with extensive lists of Web links, most accessible from the imprint's eponymous Web site. Both books begin with a dramatic episode: in jefferson, it's the signing of the Declaration of Independence; in kennedy, it's the WWII battle that earned Kennedy a purple heart. Subsequent chapters follow both the men from early childhood through death, focusing on each president's accomplishments and pivotal political events while in office. The texts are clear and adequate for beginning report research, but some events are too simplified. In Jefferson, for example, Sally Hemings is mentioned only in a Web reference. The design, which mimics a Web-page format, is cluttered, and printed reproductions of Web pages are difficult to read. Adding Web links to the body of the text (they only appear on an introductory page) might improve the format, but they are still excellent resources that offer students an innovative alternative to overwhelming results gleaned from search engines.
