Synopsis
Practical Guide to Solving Preschool Behavior Problems is unique in that it focuses on very specific situations preschool teachers, caregivers and administrators face when dealing with common behavior problems. This book covers 42 behaviors, organized into seven categories: aggressive and antisocial, disruptive, destructive, emotional and dependent, eating, non-participatory and multiple behavior problems. They include relevant theories, setting a positive environment to encourage appropriate behavior, why children misbehave, working with children with special needs, techniques for dealing with inappropriate behaviors, working with parents and record keeping. The book provides thoughtful, step-by-step instructions, including observation, consideration and recommended procedures for halting the undesirable behavior. Even beginning teachers will be effective in dealing with challenging behaviors when they employ the techniques espoused in this text. A list of references including books, articles and Web sites offers further learning opportunities for the interested reader.

About the Author
Eva L. Essa is a professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she has been on the faculty since 1971. The author of several books, Ms. Essa has been engaged in writing and research, published in various professional journals, and has been involved with the National Child Development Associate Program since its inception.
