Synopsis

Giddy isn't like other mountain goats who relish picnics high atop The Needle, the highest mountain around. Stand Giddy on a mountain ledge and his head starts spinning, his face turns white, and his knees turn to jelly. When Giddy runs away to join the sheep on the valley floor, he finds his place is still with the goats, but now he has to find a way to overcome his fear of heights. Luckily, his new friends, Edmund, a lamb who wants to be a rock climber, helps out.
Humorous illustrations bring to life this light-hearted and charming story. The theme of overcoming a fear by helping a friend supports character education.

Reviews

PreSchool-Grade 2-Misunderstood by his fearless, cliff-loving family, a young acrophobic goat runs away from home. Seeking refuge on a sheep meadow, he is soon sent away by a snobby old ram. Feeling as though there is no place for him in the world, Giddy suddenly hears the cry of a lamb lost on the mountain and resolves that he must "find the fearless goat inside himself" and go to the rescue. Making his way up steep rocks, Giddy locates the animal. Edmund longs to climb, and before long, the two animals have forged a bond. They work together to hone their mountaineering skills and build a relationship despite their differences. Filled with a mix of messages about the power of friendship, the importance of individuality, and the need to look beyond stereotypes, the story is a bit heavy-handed. However, the accessible text moves at a quick pace and the artwork is colorful and appealing. The textured cartoon paintings, in an array of Popsicle-bright colors, depict expressive animals and dramatic landscapes. An additional purchase that might provide a bit of bibliotherapy.
