Social Work Problem Solving and Beyond breaks new ground in the field of social work. Starting with a history of the emergence of social work in Canada, this social work practice text presents a view of social work that incorporates, not without criticism, problem solving as foundational to traditional practice but also a conception of practice that takes us beyond. The authors argue that there are newer approaches that both critique and enrich generalist social work practice. Strengths, Aboriginal, structural, and feminist approaches need to be incorporated into generalist social work practice. This text was written using perspectives relevant to modern social work practice in North America. It examines policy and relates it specifically to social work practice. A full chapter is devoted to cultural diversity and awareness in social work. Further, all of the approaches in the book are presented as culturally sensitive. Social Work Problem Solving and Beyond, while drawing upon both Canadian and American content, emphasizes Canadian social work experience and developments. The Canadian experience, often without fanfare, has greatly enriched social work practice. The authors have formulated a model of generalist social work practice that they believe can work in other societies with comparable social work education, social welfare and social policy environments. The authors seek to expand students’ exposure to a brad set of approaches and principles of social work within the generalist context. By doing so they overcome the temptation to limit students’ understandings of social work to constricted practice and knowledge areas that apply only to specific populations of social work clients.
