Kindergarten-Grade 3-- A family farm in Iowa is thrown into a state of turmoil; the corn has grown as tall as trees, mice have turned Aunt Bertha's hair white, the goats are stuck together with pancake syrup, and things get worse before they get better. The outlandish events are underscored by the matter-of-fact narration, reminiscent of Barrett's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Atheneum, 1978). While there is some clever wordplay, there are few connections between each mishap, so this straightforward style becomes blunt and choppy, the sense of continuity is lost quickly, and readers remain observers rather than participants. Many of the incidents are uninspired and forced, and the final explanation for the mayhem (the farm is afloat high above the clouds) falls flat. Warhola's watercolor illustrations of pop-eyed animals are appropriately grotesque, but the landscapes do not consistently reflect the scenery pictured on previous pages. Cloudy . . . or Fleischman's "McBroom" series (Little) offer more fully developed, satisfying tall-tale excursions. --Starr LaTronica, North Berkeley Library, CA
