Kindergarten-Grade 3-Lionel, an industrious youngster who loves ice cream, decides that if one has to grow up and go to work, being a king might be the best position to seek out. However, after finding and graduating from King School, he discovers that there are few job openings. He also learns that his lack of royal parentage is another serious drawback. At the edge of despair, he hears the cheery call of the ice-cream vendor and is hired as the partner and spokesperson for the business-"The Ice Cream King." Fanciful pen-and-ink cartoons with watercolor washes done in cheerful, muted shades provide the perfect support for this lighthearted fantasy. It reads aloud well though the detailed illustrations are sometimes too subtle for group appreciation (the classroom full of future kings is well worth a long and careful look). Skilled readers will enjoy the harmony of text and artwork.
