With the sun setting on the quiet neighbourhood and the lights aglow in the old fire hall, it's hard to imagine the noise and activity that wait just one alarm bell away. When that bell sounds, everyone leaps into action. There is a night fire blazing and people must be saved!
Now even the smallest firefighter can jump aboard the clanging fire engine and race to the rescue. Simple, rhythmic text gives ample opportunity for chiming in during bedtime readings.

reS-Gr 1-In quiet moments, when "nighttime comes/and wraps itself around the sun," firefighters wash their red truck, then relax, "play Go Fish-read-feed the dog." But as soon as the alarm sounds, they spring into action. The text conveys simply stated emotions: "`Save the people! Get them out!/Are you all right?' their neighbors shout." Lukasewich's brief, rhyming couplets allow the illustrations to be the focal point. Colorful spreads fill in the details and capture the action and drama of a nighttime rescue. The off-kilter perspectives and leaning houses artfully show the confusion and panic. After the firefighters have doused the blaze and comforted the children, the neighborhood repays them with warm handshakes and cheers of "Good job, well done!" As they return to their fire hall, "they hope to sleep till noon,/As morning puts away the moon." A satisfying glimpse into the ever-popular world of firefighters.
