The book does not try to be totally comprehensive ... but there is much food for thought in the presentations ... In order wisely to use and to share the resources available in the world, we need constantly to assess and to limit our consumption. This book is an attempt to bring these limitations in line with our consciences. (Jim O'Neill The Canadian Field-Naturalist 1998-07-17)
Drawing on the work of an exceptionally well qualified group of authors, People and Environment presents a carefully selected and cohesive set of the most important topics in the field of environment and development. Informed by the authors' practical development experience as well as research, the book's treatment of such topics as global warming, sustainability, biodiversity, conservation and biotechnology will provide authoritative contemporary insights and perspectives into key issues for students of environment and development.
Reflecting many of the main themes of the Rio Earth Summit, the book concentrates on the interactions between people and environment. The opening chapter explores such interactions and sets the scene for the rest of the book, which is characterized by the multidisciplinary approach essential to a clear understanding of the complexities involved in the relationship between people and environment, especially in a development context. In addtion to the topics mentioned above, the fundamental issues of population are examined in detail, and the gender dimension is also addressed.
As a concise overview of key topics, People and Environment will prove very useful to undergraduate students in development studies, environmental studies/sciences, agriculture, geography and area studies.
