Synopsis

From the dark blue waters of the deep reef to warm shallow lagoons, this title explores the colorful species that make their home in a coral reef. The colors of branching elkhorn coral, delicate sea fans, and hermit crabs and starfish live in these spectacular gardens and make up coral reef sea life. Full-color photos.

About the Author

Dr Jen Green worked in publishing for 15 years and is now a full-time writer who has written over 200 books for children, on geography, the environment, history, natural history, and other subjects. Her Heinemann-Raintree title on Sustaining Our Natural Resources was selected in 2011 for the Junior Library Guild's SLJ Curriculum Levels program.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-4-These useful resources cover the ecological habitat of animals and plants, their interaction, and survival in their respective habitats throughout the year. The need for the well-being of the ecological system is stressed. Students are encouraged to explore tide pools or to visit an aquarium as an extension to learning more about coral reefs, and to observe birds that might be flying north to the tundra. These suggestions seem a stretch and nonessential. Clearly captioned color photographs and illustrations show the variety of life in these environments, and sidebars labeled "Fantastic Facts" give additional information. Other excellent titles include Michael George's Coral Reef (1992; o.p.) and Tundra (1994; o.p., both Creative Education) and titles in the "Amazing Journeys" series (Heinemann Library).
