What is a black hole and what does its existence mean? The lastest research on these and other questions is explored inside this book. Easy-to-read text takes readers on a journey through space and explores its most mysterious occupants as well as other bizarre space objects. Up-to-date pictures and clear text introduce new technology and interesting facts about far-off space. Other topics explored include - how black holes suck matter from nearby stars - how some explorers believe black holes may be gateways for exploring the universe - magnetic fields of stars - the birth and death of stars - telescopes and space probes that search for black holes

Gr. 5-8 This volume in the Science Frontiers series examines black holes and other astronomical phenomena, such as the birth and death of stars, the size of the universe, space-based telescopes, and gamma-ray bursts. Each concept is introduced in a separate double-page spread, which features about 100 words of text and a large color photograph or drawing surrounded by smaller illustrations and sidebars. Readers drawn by the visually appealing format may be unable to fully grasp the abstract and complex theories presented here, and matters are occasionally further confused by references to science fiction (one passage suggests that black holes might be "a one-way time travel ticket"). However, many children will come away with a rudimentary understanding of some of the concepts, and few will be unimpressed by the striking, colorful telescope images of deep space. A glossary, a detailed time line, and suggestions for related general-interest Web sites are appended. Todd Morning
