Each of the four books in the new Plants Close-Up series offers an extremely basic introduction to plant parts and functions. What Are Stems? covers different types and features of stems, such as underground stems, tree trunks, and thorns; stems’ water-storing function; and nodes and buds. All the books’ pages are laid out similarly, with one large photo or simple diagram and a short paragraph of text on each page. While this layout is exceptionally clear, especially for the diagrams, it does become a bit monotonous. The final page of each title features notes for adults about one or two very simple activities (for example, growing a plant from a root such as a potato) or experiments (such as growing seeds with water, sunlight, or both) related to the book’s topic.
