What people 'say' with their bodies is just as important as what they say with their words. Humans communicate nonverbally through hundreds of gestures and movements; how we stand, position our arms, or use facial expressions all reveal our thought or intentions. Come inside Read the Signals. The Body Language Handbook to learn how you can read others' body language, and how to send the right signals with your own.

Most of the information in this title will already be familiar to teens accustomed to hearing their parents hiss “Smile” or “Don’t slouch” in awkward social situations, but this expedient read explains why their parents carry on. Naik jumps right into this entry in the Really Useful Handbooks series with a chapter on body language, followed by a chapter on flirtation, but then segues into topics relating more to interpersonal interaction than decoding body language. She covers bullying, self-confidence, and overcoming shyness all with a healthy sprinkling of celebrity examples. Bright primary colors and boxed-in bullet points present the information more like lists of tips rather than traditional expository passages. Photos of multicultural, fresh-faced teens socializing and demonstrating positive body language abound. This is hardly an in-depth exploration of all things nonverbal, but it is a nifty title for teens who want to make eyes at their crush or be able to spot a fake friend. Grades 4-8. --Courtney Jones
