Taken from Chapter 5: Family life Hope for the children Children are the center of the Indian household and receive much attention from their loving families. Couples are especially happy when a boy is born. A son, along with his wife, will care for his parents when they become old. Parents try to educate their children and hope that they will live healthy, happy and prosperous lives. Many children are now better educated than their parents. If a family is poor, however, children often go to work at a young age to help support the family. India hopes that in the future all children will go to school.
