Synopsis

Electrical Engineering/Electromagnetics Methods for Electromagnetic Field Analysis A volume in the IEEE Series on Electromagnetic Wave Theory Donald G. Dudley, Series Editor . a gigantic platter of formulae of the dyadic kind.'--Akhlesh Lakhtaki, Professor, The Pennsylvania State University This monograph discusses mathematical and conceptual methods applicable in the analysis of electromagnetic fields and waves. Dyadic algebra is reviewed and armed with new identities it is applied throughout the book. The power of dyadic operations is seen when working with boundary, sheet and interface conditions, medium equations, field transformations, Greens functions, plane wave problems, vector circuit theory, multipole and image sources. Dyadic algebra offers convenience in handling problems involving chiral and bianisotropic media, of recent interest because of their wide range of potential applications. The final chapter gives, for the first time in book form, a unified presentation of EIT, the exact image theory, introduced by this author and colleagues. EIT is a general method for solving problems involving layered media by replacing them through image sources located in complex space. The main emphasis of the monograph is not on specific results but methods of analysis. The contents should be of interest to scientists doing research work in various fields of electromagnetics, as well as to graduate students. The addition of problems and answers in this reprint will enhance the teaching value of this work. Also in the series. Mathematical Foundations for Electromagnetic Theory Donald D. Review

'The book is written in a clear style and presented in an attractive layout ... a valuable compendium for the dyadic methods as well as an up-to-date overview of some areas of modern electromagnetic research.' W.S. Weiglhofer, AEU, Vol. 47, No. 3, 1993

'This concisely written book contains much more information than one would expect from its size ... a very valuable tool for anybody investigating electromagnetic fields in complicated media.' Kurt Suchy, Heinrich-Heine-Universitat Dusseldorf, The Radioscientist, Vol. 5, No. 1 (March 1994)

'the book avoids undue mathematical formalism, and will be readily accessible to its intended readership ... A nice feature of the book is the inclusion of topics not often covered in textbooks on electromagnetism ... The book is well-produced and is written in an authoritative and readable style. I can recommend it as an original and significant contribution at postgraduate level that will be of interest to all workers in classical electromagnetic theory, and of particular relevance to those in the fields of non-linear optics and anisotropic materials.' Mike Jones, Optical and Quantum Electronics, Vol. 26, No. 4, April 1994

`This concisely written book contains much more information than one would expect from its size ... The book is a very valuable tool for anybody investigating electromagnetic fields in complicated media.' The Radioscientist Vol5, No 1, March 1994

`This is an interesting book ... the author has done the mathematical world a service by producing this work. The book reads well, the format is pleasing and few printing errors ... This book throws new light on old problems and can be warmly recommended.' Mathematical Reviews, Issue 94b

`Ismo Lindell's book can be placed in a rare category directed toward those who are working in the diverse fields of engineering electromagnetics. It is unusual in that it is presented on a fairly sophisticated mathematical level that is not often found in current books on the subject ... A very useful appendix of dyadic operations is included ... this book is highly recommended to those with an interest in keeping abreast of methods of modern analysis in electromagnetism. It most certainly will become one of the classic references for the many useful subjects and techniques it presents.' American Scientist, Vol 82, July/August 1994

`....an excellent testimonial for the health of electromagnetics book-publishing. A highly theoretical monograph, this volume is a gigantic platter of formulae of the dyadic kind.' IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, Vol. 36, No. 6, December 1994.
