Synopsis
Asthma cases and deaths are on the increase in the United States and in many other Western countries, despite major advancements in treatment. This rise has made asthma an especially important public health issue, because it comes at a time when deaths from most other causes are on the decline. By 1998, the number of Americans with asthma had reached an estimated 17.3 million. The number of asthma deaths more than doubled between 1979 and 1995, totaling 5,637.
