Designed for general readers, Omnigraphics’ Health Reference Series began in 1989 and is still going strong. This addition deals with a condition that afflicts a growing number of children but is poorly understood. Various U.S. documents and excerpts, as well as materials from other organizations, are grouped into sections covering causes, conditions, diagnosis and evaluation, treatment and interventions, and other topics. Between 1994 and 2004, the number of children who were diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder and in public special education programs increased tenfold, so any resource is welcome. --Mary Ellen Quinn
