PreSchool-K-While designed to answer children's questions, this selection is so oversimplified that the statements are often confusing or inaccurate. For example, why not call a "special machine" a baler? A sheepdog is said to herd both sheep and cattle; the description of a tractor implies that its tires are more important than its engine; and tractors don't plow the field, plows do. Also, in a scene in which a little girl milks a cow, the animal isn't tethered to anything. One question and a brief answer appear on each two-page spread; a small yellow "Did you know?" box with a gray cat sleeping on it provides another factual tidbit. Bright, sweet, humorous pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations do a great deal to salvage the spare, often misleading text. A fun picture book, but don't expect youngsters to glean much information from it.
