About the Author

"Freedom," says Thelma Wells, "comes when you are not dependent on any human being to design your life and your attitude for you; when you realize nobody is responsible for your happiness but you." She should know! Thelma overcame childhood abuse and poverty to become the happy, successful woman you see today. The first black woman to become an Assistant Vice President of a commercial bank, Thelma went on to organize an international speaking and consulting company (for which she received the Small Business Administration's Entrepreneur of the Year Award), earn a master's degree, and become a college professor. Last year Thelma was awarded an honorary doctorate - but she says we don't have to call her "Dr. Wells". Her new book, What These Girls Knew, takes a look at women in the Bible and what they have to tell us today. Thelma and husband George live in Texas, enjoying their children and grandchildren.

From Publishers Weekly

Women seeking to-the-point spiritual advice on some of life's toughest problems can find solace in this candid, if superficial, guide. Wells, a popular speaker and author of What's Going On, Lord?, responds to the hurts and concerns expressed to her by women all over the country. Written in an intimate style, this motivational manual touches on several--perhaps too many--topics. From anger and addiction to depression and debt, Wells uses her straightforward Southern voice to encourage women to press on. Each chapter presents a petition for help, practical and spiritual advice and a prayer. Commenting on divorce, Wells writes that Christian women "have all been sold the storybook edition of marriage." She believes there will always be some difficulty when two people are in any kind of relationship. Wells assures women who are questioning their own sexuality that she understands because her own sister "was convinced for most of her life that she was born a lesbian." She reminds the women that there is no condemnation for Christians. Without being judgmental, Wells encourages the reader "to study the Scriptures for yourself, Baby, and pray that the Holy Spirit who lives within you will show you who you are." While providing personal stories from her own life and the lives of others, Wells attempts to speak the truth in love. (Apr.)
