Sophie English graduated from the London College of Fashion in 1992 and went on to work with various designers including Nicole Farhi. She began her business in 1993 making couture clothes and launched her first bridal wear collection in 1995 which sold through her showroom in Pimlico as well as a wholesale collection selling through retailers across the UK at Harrods, Liberty and Dickins & Jones. A chance meeting with a restaurant manager who was dissatisfied with her current staff uniforms started a new successful venture offering designer uniforms to clients who well-thought, well-cut practical outfits. Sophie also teaches a Dressmaking Skills course at Westdean College, an internationally renowned study center, specializing in crafts and visual arts.
Got a sewing problem you can't solve? This useful 'chunky' little book will come to the rescue, answering 200 questions on a vast range of sewing pattern topics. Includes advice on choosing, using and adapting sewing patterns, given in a straightforward question-and-answer format. Information on choosing the correct pattern for your size and shape. Ideas for making your own patterns for simple clothes, household items and soft furnishing.-Sew Today Take the mystery out of commercial sewing patterns with this great little guide that explains every aspect of using a paper pattern from taking accurate measurements to cutting, marking, understanding symbols and perfecting the fit. Ideal for beginners and intermediate sewers, it focuses on getting the full potential out of a pattern and expands on the information they provide in terms of appropriate fabric, interfacing and notions before clarifying the standard terminology used by pattern companies. The sections on altering garments to improve the fit or incorporate style changes are particularly helpful with clear photos and detailed explanations whilst the final section concludes with tips and techniques to achieve a professional finish.-Sewing World Being married to an architect, I have always had an interest in patterns, as there is a strong similarity between getting a flat dressmaking pattern and turning it into a three dimensional garment and turning a working drawing into a building. I was surprised that there were 200 questions to ask about patterns, but the book covers the use of patterns in its broadest sense. For example : What sort of interlining to use and how to find out your body shape. The book starts with essential equipment and choosing fabric, shows how to take measurements accurately and then goes onto the more complex business of adjusting and changing patterns. There are problem solving answers to questions such as how do I fix a gaping neckline? How do I adjust for a sway back? What do I do if the back of the armhole is gaping on a sleeve? For me the most useful information given was how to reproduce a favourite pair of trousers. At GBP9.99 this book is real value for money as it will enable you to adjust and change any patterns you already have as well as explaining what everything on the pattern envelope means.-Sewingdirectory.co.uk
