Synopsis

A haunting on F staircase in St. Thomas's College, Cambridge bitterly divides the college, and the Cambridge branch of the Psychic Investigation Unit (PIU) is invited to carry out an experiment. The main opponent of the plan, Professor Hawkridge, insists on being present when for the nocturnal investigation by the "ghostbusters," only to drop dead of a heart attack. Now the college is really in trouble. The press has a field day, Hawkridge's widow threatens to sue, and St. Thomas's is swamped with tourists who want to sleep in the "haunted" room. Sir Joseph Zuylestein, the College Master, asks Dr. Nathaniel Gye, a parapsychologist, if he can make some discreet enquiries with a view to closing the whole sorry business — the affair could not have come at a worse time, as St. Thomas's is about to accept a major donation from a publicity-shy billionaire. But Zuylestein has another reason for wanting everything hushed up — he has received anonymous letters indicating that the undergraduate Tom Sutton, whose unquiet spirit supposedly haunts F staircase, did not commit suicide ten years earlier, but was murdered.

About the Author:

Derek Wilson is best known for his historical works of non-fiction, biography, and fiction. He graduated from Peterhouse, Cambridge, and subsequently was awarded the university's Archbishop Cranmer Prize for postgraduate research. A varied career in the sixties and seventies involved considerable travel and work as an antiques dealer, broadcaster, and teacher. He has written over 50 critically acclaimed books and has written and presented numerous programmes for radio and television.

He works from his homes in North Devon and Normandy, and is married with three grown-up children.

Parapsychologist-amateur sleuth Nathaniel Gye returns for another is-it-or-ain't-it mystery. Is the death of a college professor a simple heart attack, or were supernatural forces involved? Is someone from the "other side" trying to sabotage the investigation into a haunted staircase, or is ordinary mischief afoot? The story itself is a little weak (nobody, including the author, really seems to believe too strongly in a supernatural explanation), but Nat is a strong and engaging protagonist, with a sharp mind and a nice sense of humor. Believers in the paranormal will enjoy the otherworldly atmosphere, while skeptics will credit the author's reasoned approach to the material. David Pitt
