The titles are primarily from fiction (including, along with novels, particularly important poetry, plays, and short stories), though a few are from literary works of nonfiction. Each entry gives title, author, year of publication, and a detailed explanation of the story behind the title.

This compilation of more than 1,300 titles of literary works explains their origin and significance. The works included were almost all originally written in English (the majority are American) and are mostly fiction (including short story collections and plays). The author, a prolific British compiler of reference books dealing with names of one sort or another, includes well-known adult titles, but there are also childrens' classics such as Alice in Wonderland.
The entries are arranged alphabetically by title and note author and year of publication. The entry always begins with the author's nationality and a short explanation of the plot as it relates to the title. The source of the title is given. Very often the title refers to a character or the setting of the piece. If the source of the title is a quotation, an excerpt is offered. For example, for Larry McMurtry's Horseman, Pass By, several lines are provided from a poem by Yeats that serves as the source. If there is no known source for a title, the author surmises its relevance to the plot or theme. Entries range in length from one sentence to several.
The introduction offers interesting information on the most frequently used words in titles and the sources most often quoted (the Bible, Shakespeare). There is an index of authors, titles, and some subjects (countries, wars) and a bibliography of books on literary analysis. Large academic or public libraries might find it useful to have this information available in one volume; the volume is also interesting to browse.
