Drawing together the best sellers lists of Publishers Weekly and the New York Times Book Review, begun in 1919 and 1935, respectively, this book indexes the contents of those lists in several useful ways. While it sets out not only to provide thorough and reliable information for researchers but to snare curious readers with interesting tidbits about favorite authors, this is for the most part a very specifically focused reference work designed to answer a narrow band of questions. The main body of the text lists authors by last name, giving all books by that author to appear on either best sellers list. Also given for each title in an author's entry is the first date it appeared on each list and its peak position date as well as the total time on all lists. Following this main section is a series of appendixes presenting a ranking of authors with more than ten listed books, from Louis L'Amour with 30 to Robert Wilder (among others) with ten; a ranking of books listed for 100 weeks or more; a complete list of authors and their total weeks, and a comprehensive title index. Also noteworthy in the preliminary pages is a "Brief History of the Bestseller Lists." That any reference book such as this one is necessarily out-of-date was underscored in recent weeks when John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (LJ 1/94) became the longest-running best seller on either list.
