This manual is a step-by-step guide to making the most of CD-ROM technology in schools and libraries. Part 1 gives the nuts and bolts on designing your CD-ROM system and developing acquisition strategies. Such topics as hardware requirements, financial planning, compatibility between systems, copyright issues, and licensing are covered here. Part 2 is a practical guide to managing the CD-ROM system, including details on installation of the titles, maintaining hardware and software, and troubleshooting. Technical information is provided in Part 3, with information on such matters as configuring the workstations and installing CD-ROM titles when the vendor-supplied program fails.

Catherine Mambretti is the president of ICON Associates, a multimedia training program development company. She lives in La Grange, Illinois.
Prepared for libraries and schools without large technical support organizations, Mambretti's manual constitutes a one-stop source for help with many situations that schools and libraries will encounter in providing CD-ROMs to patrons. The first of its three sections deals with the steps involved in developing CD-ROM technology within a school or library setting and includes advice on selecting equipment and evaluating CD-ROM titles. The second offers practical guidance for installing and maintaining a CD-ROM collection, and the third is an extensive handbook for dealing with many common problems encountered in employing CD-ROM workstations and the operating systems used on them. Of particular value is the glossary of CD-ROM technology terms. Edward Swanson
Some puzzling statements are made here, e.g., "a CD-ROM title disc is also literally more durable than a book or magazine." This reviewer begs to differ. Drop a book on the floor, stomp on it, pick it up, and it is still (almost) as good as new, but don't try that with a CD-ROM. And CD-ROMs certainly don't have the proven archival quality of good paper products. Otherwise, there is some good information here. Beginning with the planning and evaluation process for purchasing CD-ROMs and the hardware to use them, Mambretti, president of a multimedia training program development company, continues with advice on installing CD-ROM titles and solving many common problems in various operating systems: DOS, Windows, and Macintosh. Recommended for libraries where CD-ROMs are used, but take the dramatic pronouncements with a grain of salt.?Margaret Sylvia, St. Mary's Univ. Academic Lib., San Antonio
