Retired printer Gary Alden Smith lives in Eugene, Oregon.
Smith has written a readable and well-researched book on how boundaries of U.S. states have been determined. Chapters are arranged by region (New England, Mid-Atlantic, Upper South, etc.) and then by state. The history of a state's boundaries is described, followed by an explanation of the borders of the contiguous states. The preface mentions that most of the boundaries are discussed twice, with each neighboring state. Although the information may be repeated, the exact wording is different.
Boundaries may change because of physical features such as mountains and water, so courts still hear boundary claims of states. The author notes that in 1998 New Jersey claimed and was awarded the landfilled part of Ellis Island. Another interesting fact is that Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah are the only states with boundaries of latitude and longitude.
A number of line-drawn maps accompany the text and are the only illustrations. Two appendixes list state and citizen nicknames and a chronology of boundary dates, from the Virginia Company receiving a grant in 1606 to a Supreme Court decision to award an island in a river to Maine in 2001. An extensive bibliography is arranged by chapter with a number of references to historic government documents and periodical articles from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The index appears to include only proper names but still may be useful.
Although there are U.S. Geological Survey bulletins and professional papers on state boundaries, this volume is the first commercially published reference on the topic. It is recommended for academic and large public libraries. Christine Bulson
