Arranged by category (action-adventure, cartoons, circus and magic, comedy, fun and games, information, kindly hosts and hostesses, puppets and marionettes, westerns, and specials), more than 200 children's shows are detailed. Entries provide a narrative history (and give broadcast times and dates, network and alternative titles).

Jeffery Davis, of St. Louis, has written for Filmfax and the Saturday Review.
Davis discusses TV shows for children arranged by category, from "Action-Adventure" series such as Robin Hood to "Specials" such as Charlie Brown. The originators of the programs, how long the shows were viewed on television, character portrayals, and brief critiques are included within the entries. Programs that can fit in more than one category are cross-referenced. For example, Fury is discussed in "Action-Adventure" with a see reference under "Westerns." Appendixes lists awards and citations, series appearing in prime time, and programs originating in radio or movies. A chronology of landmarks in children's programing lists important debuts. The index includes program titles, program originators, and performers' names. Black-and-white photos are provided for a few shows.
This well-researched book spanning 43 years provides the researcher with a comprehensive view of TV for children. For example, The Kukla, Fran and Ollie show, which began in 1947, ultimately led the way for such related puppet programs as Sesame Street. The work will also be nostalgic reading for those who remember Buffalo Bob or the Mickey Mouse Club. A worthwhile purchase for public and academic libraries.
