About the Author:
Proclaimed "one of the foremost authorities on the American school of guitar music" by Guitar Review magazine, Douglas Back is gaining recognition for his expertise in 19th century American guitar literature. He has presented lecture-recitals and concerts of his music to a variety of audiences nationwide, including the Guitar Foundation of America's 1995 and 1996 International Festivals. While earning undergraduate and graduate degrees in music performance, Douglas studied at the St. Louis Conservatory of Music, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and the Florida State University. His teachers have included Bruce Holzman, Alan Rosenkoetter, and Rodney Stucky. As a student, he won top prize in the George C. Krick Memorial Guitar Competition. Mr. Back was the recipient of a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts Recording Grant in 1993 and was the first guitarist to record the works of American guitar pioneers William Foden and Justin Holland. He has contributed various articles about the guitar to Soundboard and Guitar Review journals. His interviews and performances have been heard on National Public Radio's All Things Considered, National Australian Radio, and National Australian Television. Mr. Back has held teaching positions at the St. Louis Conservatory and School for the Arts, Georgia Southwestern College, Alabama State University, Troy State University, and the Montgomery, Alabama, Public Schools Arts Magnet Program.
