Lewis presents a collection of 15 excerpts from assorted military writings that are a tenuously related as accounts of particularly successful or closely knit ("elite") units. They range from World War II through Dien Bien Phu to the Falklands. Some, such as Vladimir Peniakoff's cheerfully British account of desert warfare in Tunisia ("Popski's Private Army") and Otto Skorzeny's self-serving tale of his rescue of Mussolini, are well known. Others, such as the nearly incomprehensible excerpt from a longer work on the Entebbe rescue, are well worth skipping. Many librarians may find this more suitable for YA collections; in any case, it is only for the most dedicated collector of militaria.
