From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1?Between the front endpapers (the rich brown of the earth) and the back ones (the "mellow yellow" of the sun), this picture book relates how the sun helps the grass grow, the cow eats the grass, the boy milks the cow, and the granny churns the milk to make...butter! Jackson is a gifted writer who can make the simplest language rhythmic and interesting. The intriguing illustrations, created with a modeling compound that is baked and then painted, are fabulous: everything is curved and rounded and full of movement and texture. Even the barn looks like it's about to take off. The bright, deep colors go perfectly with the elemental subject matter. Varied typefaces add to the lively feel. The book ends with two recipes, one for "big brown pancakes," and another for "yellow mellow butter," which will work well as a group activity.?Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL

From Publishers Weekly

Though playfully assorted typefaces and Claymation-like illustrations lend this book a novel appearance, they can't disguise Jackson's (Cinder Edna) simplistic narrative. The marginal story is one part color sequence, one part cumulative tale. "The yellow mellow sunlight warmed the earth. The grass grew green and tall. Along walked a brown cow. The cow ate the green grass." A boy milks the cow to get white milk, which he gives to his grandmother, who (while singing a song that reiterates the preceding sequence) churns it into yellow butter. Effective shadowing and the clarity of the reproductions give a convincing, 3-D quality to pictures of debut illustrator Raymond's whimsical, brightly painted sculptures (made of a modeling compound called Sculpey). The bland text concludes with tasty addenda: recipes for Big Brown Pancakes and Yellow Mellow Butter. Ages 2-6.
