From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 6?If you are looking for a poetry book for reluctant readers, Slam Dunk is it. Similar in scope to Lillian Morrison's At the Crack of the Bat (Hyperion, 1992), this volume concentrates on basketball. Complete with odes to Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan, the sport and its stars are celebrated by such varied writers as Jerry Spinelli, Jack Prelutsky, Walter Dean Myers, and Myra Cohn Livingston. The majority of the poems have appeared in other collections, some of which are still in print. However, this is an attractive offering. Illustrated with pencil and pastel drawings, the poems are effectively arranged. Sports fans, especially those who are being forced to read poetry for an assignment, might just breathe a sigh of relief that they can still read about Shaquille O'Neal.?Melissa Hudak, North Suburban District Library, Roscoe, IL
