Kindergarten-Grade 3?Reed's book provides a fun adventure to help kids learn the Spanish language alphabet. Pedro receives a perro (a dog) and a sombrero (a hat) for his birthday. He likes the perro, but the sombrero is plain, so he decides to fix it up. The text flows in a light, cheerful manner from page to page as the boy decorates it with items ranging from a toy avion (a plane) to a zorillo (a skunk). The oil-pastel illustrations are bright and done in a primitive-looking, Southwestern style. Although the book is great fun, it should be noted that W and RR are left out entirely since they are rarely?if ever?used at the beginning of a Spanish word. Foreign words are used for K and X. These discrepancies are explained in an endnote about the language. A pronunciation guide is provided. Alma Flor Ada's Abecedario de los animales (Espasa Calpe, 1990) is another exceptional offering; however, it is completely in Spanish. Reed's title is well done and is a welcome addition.?Maria Redburn, Collier County Public Library, Immokalee, FL
