Grade 2-3?In this beginning chapter book, Lucy wants to be best friends with Maya, the new girl in her class. The action takes place during the course of a school day, a comfortable time frame for young readers. Children will recognize the events that pace the story: riding the bus, learning to subtract, art time, lunch, and recess. Lucy is a likable character and readers will identify with her wish to befriend someone as appealing as Maya. Lucy's classmate Zach brings additional zest to the story with his gum-chomping and pencil-poking friendliness. Simple, yet lively scratchboard illustrations balance the actions described. A fine addition where easy chapter books are in demand.?Maura Bresnahan, Topsfield Town Library, MA
