Review:
William Wegman and his cast of canines are back, and this time Chip is in a bit of a bind. His school report is due and he hasn't got a clue as to what he might want to report on--all he wants to do is take pictures! But write a report he must, so Chip heads downtown in search of a topic. He consults a host of characters--and snaps their photos, too--including fire chief Chundo, construction foreman Culvert, Barry the beautician, and police officer Badgerino, who tells Chip that "ideas come from everywhere. There is no one way. Look in all directions." Chip takes Badgerino's valuable advice and decides that a photo essay is a great idea. After all, a "picture is worth a thousand words!" Wegman does it again with imaginative settings, colorful text, and those delightful Weimaraners.
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 4-Wegman fans rejoice-the wily weimaraners are suited up again. No period costumes [as in Cinderella (1993) or Little Red Riding Hood (1993)] or canine body draping this time [as in ABC (1994) or 123 (1995, all Hyperion)]; the dog heads appear above attire appropriate to all those folks in town. Chip has to write a report but all he wants to do is take photographs. A bus driver, teacher, librarian, coach, artist, police officer, mail carrier, firefighter, mechanic, and others try to help. The dog isn't inspired by any of their suggestions but he takes their pictures with his camera. Finally, inspiration dawns. The pup realizes he doesn't have to write the report-he can produce a photo-documentary. Just like his character, the author realizes he doesn't have to create great literatureto frame this work. A simple straightforward text with a blush of wit supports the illustrations without distraction. The full-color photographs are ingenious and the infinitely patient canines shine once again in this tribute to the people who make up a small town. A surefire hit for units on community helpers and Wegman devotees.
