Part of the MiniRus Textbook Series.
Minirus is a quick course in Russian designed to acquaint students with the basics of the language as it is spoken. It has the following goals:
-To get students started in communicating in Russian using elementary constructions that demand only a minimal understanding of grammatical forms;
-To develop skills in recognizing syllabic and word boundaries so that words already learned can be identified in the flow of speech at normal speed;
-To build elementary skills needed for working with written texts by showing the relationship between sounds and letters;
-To establish a ready vocabulary base by using words in set colloquial phrases;
-To teach students how to make sense of the flow of speech by grouping words in context and making intelligent guesses about the meaning of statements - this will also expand students' passive vocabulary;
-To give students a general idea of the structure of the Russian language.
MiniRus can prepare students for work in a more comprehensive language course, making it easier for them to "get into the language." It demonstrates to students that it is possible to start speaking Russian now, even with a minimal knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. Experience has shown that the MiniRus approach also makes memorizing easier and improves pronunciation and intonation.
While being tested at Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges, the MiniRus course proved popular with students and teachers alike. They especially appreciated features such as a quick transition from learning to speaking and the feeling of satisfaction that comes from being able, from the very start, to communicate meaning in a new language; the useful tricks which help beginners listen with understanding, to "get the drift" without trying to translate every word; and the sense of accomplishment gained from quickly mastering elements of a language like Russian.
MiniRus includes the textbook, workbook, and four audiocassettes.
