Gr 6 Up-This set covers devices, processes, and terms as well as some nontechnical topics, such as ethics and technology's impact on society. Each of the eight sections begins with a chronology related to the topic. The technologies covered within these chapters include speech synthesizers, transistors, geothermal energy, sustainable agriculture, organ transplants, sewage systems, plastics, and spaceflight. Each article begins with an introductory section and a history and concludes with a list of sources that range from other UXL publications to Encyclopedia Britannica and scientific Web pages. The topics of the essays are selective and the author makes no claims to comprehensiveness. There are 112 identical pages in each volume; they contain a table of contents, a reader's guide, a helpful time line and glossary, a bibliography (divided into books, CD-ROMs, and Web sites), and an index. Frequent line drawings and graphics enhance understanding, and black-and-white photos add interest. Advanced students will find this a good starting point for further research and less-able students will not find it intimidating.-Priscilla Bennett, State University of West Georgia
