Grade 5 Up-This well-organized, alphabetically arranged resource profiles 75 individuals. More than two-thirds are of Lebanese descent, with lesser numbers of those with Syrian, Palestinian, or Egyptian backgrounds. Each entry has several pages of clearly written text with explanatory sidebars and a list for further reading that consists mainly of newspaper and magazine articles. Most articles are accompanied by average-quality, black-and-white photos. Each sketch describes an individual's childhood and personal life, career, and the impact of his or her Middle Eastern heritage. Personalities from Doug Flutie to Donna Shalala, and Kahlil Gibran to Danny Thomas are included. Each volume begins with invaluable lists of the men and women by field of endeavor and ethnicity. A comprehensive index rounds out this excellent reference tool.
