Reviews

When solid-state physicist Amelio became National Semiconductor's chairman and CEO in 1991, the company was in a "death spiral," with declining profits and three days of cash reserves. With Miles as his chief consultant, Amelio, who had led Rockwell International through a comeback, pulled off a dramatic turnaround at National Semiconductor. Their strategy, set forth here in an invaluable casebook for companies seeking fundamental change, involved replacing National's entrepreneurial, shoot-from-the-hip style with careful asset management, total quality control and "benchmarking" by executives and employees who constantly measured themselves against competitors and customer expectations. This thoroughgoing, intensive, no-nonsense guide gives point and substance to familiar managerial bywords such as "developing empowered employees" and "matching core competencies to market needs." Included are internal documents, mission statements, executive workshop presentations and managers' guidelines from National. (Nov.) FYI: Amelio resigned from National Semiconductor last February to become chairman and CEO of Apple Computer, where he is attempting a similar resuscitation, again with Miles as his transformation consultant. Miles helped found the Yale School of Organization and Management, and was most recently dean of Emory's business school.

Miles possesses an unusual combination of academic credentials and practical business experience. He founded the Yale School of Organization and Management, built the executive education program at the Harvard Business School, and has been dean of Emory's business school. But he was also a partner with Gil Amelio during major turnabouts at Rockwell International and National Semiconductor, and they are now teamed in an attempt to revive Apple Computer. Miles has also worked with General Electric's legendary Jack Welch. Miles helped pioneer the strategy of transformation management, and here he lays out the framework for corporate transformation, showing how to "operationalize" each component and defining the role of the transformational leader. Amelio has already told the story of National Semiconductor's transformation in Profit from Experience (1996), but Miles emphasizes the tools and techniques of transformation, using examples from the same company to make his case. David Rouse

Miles (Organizational Game, Addison-Wesley, 1993), dean of the business school at Emory University, aims his work at those executives and leaders dealing with corporate change. He takes a scholarly approach to answering "the central leadership question about how to achieve quantum change without exposing the organization to unacceptable risk." In three parts, he describes the process of change, sets up a framework, then proceeds to detail the application of this framework at National Semiconductor. Miles includes National's strategic vision and its "change facilitator's" guide. While other current titles in this area, such as, Jerry S. White and Matthew L. Shuchman's The Art of Turnaround (AMACOM, 1994), tread similar ground, Miles's work is rooted in solid examples and filled with clear charts, graphs, and formulas. A welcome addition to business literature; recommended for academic collections.?Kathy Shimpock-Vieweg, Muchmore & Wallwork Lib., Phoenix
