Synopsis

After millions of years of evolution, human beings have yet to master person-to-person communication. Although we seem to converse reasonably well, we often fail to truly understand one another, because we can't clearly express our feelings.

"What usually goes wrong in human communications is nobody's fault and everybody's problem," says Dr. Tom Rusk, and The Power of Ethical Persuasion is his practical, strategic program for revolutionizing our age-old, dead-end communication patterns. Through Ethical Persuasion, a way of motivating people to treat each other with greater respect, caring, and fairness, we can learn to resolve conflicts ethically—without bullying, histrionics, or passive-aggressive behavior. Best of all, by cultivating the habit of empathy, we can achieve a depth of insight and compassion that will make all of our relationships—whether at home or in the workplace—more rewarding than we dreamed possible.

About the Author

TOM RUSK, MD, is the author of three previous self-help books: I Want to Change But I Don't Know How, Mind Traps, and Instead of Therapy.

From Publishers Weekly

"Helping people communicate to each other what it feels like to live in their separate, private worlds of experience" is the goal of ethical persuasion, a problem-solving strategy devised by psychiatrist Rusk (with Miller, the coauthor of Instead of Therapy ). According to this approach, a person should not try to "win" an argument but to treat an adversary with respect, understanding, caring and fairness. The authors first describe how communication breaks down during stressful negotiations, whether personal or professional, and claim that in such situations "feelings are facts." In order to work with, not against, these feelings, the authors suggest exploring the other person's point of view and clearly explaining one's own before seeking resolution. Scripted encounters in work and family settings demonstrate the technique at work. Commonsensical and relatively jargon-free.
