Book by Lardner, George, Jr.

In 1992, the author's youngest daughter, Kristin, was murdered by a former boyfriend in Boston. Her killer had an extensive police record of domestic violence, drug abuse, and other assorted criminal acts. He was a walking time bomb that the legal system failed to defuse. Lardner, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the Washington Post, gives vent to his many frustrations with a system that routinely turns a blind eye to domestic violence. He presents copious details and statistics supporting his argument that all violent criminals should be incarcerated for as long as possible. This could not have been an enjoyable book to write, and the author's pain is evident throughout. Narrator George Guidall's voice at times seems better suited to a pulpit, but he presents the material capably. The result is a very strong polemic on our society's need to be much more proactive in domestic abuse cases. Recommended.?Ray Vignovich, West Des Moines P.L., Ia.
