Reviews

It is too much to expect that every story in a collection be noteworthy, and such is the case with Rendell's latest, in which six of the ten stories are mediocrities with formulaic endings. Fortunately, the two novella-length contributions are worthwhile. The title tale, which refers to a volume of a well-known reference work, presents a lonely Londoner who devotes his life to writing authors about their factual and grammatical errors, until he becomes haunted by a horror tale. "High Mysterious Union," which recalls Rendell's best psychological thrillers, depicts the sexual temptation of a translator in a remote, rustic village. "Walter's Leg," about an ironic quest for revenge, has the most fitting of the trick endings, while "Catamount" vividly captures the natural threats posed by the Rocky Mountains. Jenny Sterlin's masterfully deliberate reading makes the weaker entries seem less hokey. Recommended for public libraries. Michael Adams, CUNY Graduate Ctr.
