O'Neill, director of the John J. Burns Library at Boston College, has edited an invigorating work to add to the growing body of information available on library security. Contributors include highly respected librarians and archivists. Quite a new flavor is added to the mix by also incorporating articles from an FBI agent and a financial officer. The authors collectively provide "reality" to the unfortunate subject of "library theft," giving advice on how to develop policies and procedures to minimize theft as well as tips on what to do if such a crime does occur. Although lacking a comprehensive bibliography, this is a welcome handbook of examples of what can happen without proper precautions and even what does happen with the best of intentions. Originally published as Journal of Library Administration (Vol. 25, No. 1, 1998), this hardback edition is recommended for special collections and academic libraries.?Anne A.
