Grade 4-8-This hi/lo book brings together five tales of the American Civil War. All seem to be based on true incidents, although no indication is given as to their sources. Consider it a collection of "urban legends" set in the 1860s. The first story-about a young soldier sentenced to be shot for falling asleep on guard duty-is told in the first person, but readers never learn the narrator's identity. The second selection is about a laundress who used her clothesline to transmit battle information. The oddest tale is the last, "The Blue and the Gray," which the reteller identifies as being based on a story by Louisa May Alcott. It is told as a short story, then is immediately followed by another version as a three-act play. This title might appeal to someone who has devoured every other book on the Civil War, but it offers little to others.
