Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the sixteenth president of the United States of America. His Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 was integral to the abolition of slavery in the United States, and the adoption of the thirteenth amendment to the Constitution in 1865. Lincoln served as president for the duration of the American Civil War, and his Gettysburg Address is considered one of the greatest speeches in American history. On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was shot by Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth and died the following day.
