About the Author

Marc Talbert has written many books for young readers, among them A Sunburned Prayer, Heart of a Jaguar (Honorable Mention for the 1995 Americas Award), and Star of Luis. He lives in Tesuque, New Mexico, whose landscape he evokes so powerfully in The Trap.

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-Talbert takes a conventional idea and tweaks it with fine writing and careful characterization. Ellie wants to avenge the killing (and consumption) of her cat by a coyote. She enlists the aid of a classmate, Troy, to set a trap along a path the coyotes use. But the trap is sprung by Fang, a stray dog Ellie's family has adopted, right before the girl's eyes. Ellie is able to release him, but his leg must be amputated. Her confrontation with pain and suffering forces her to consider the cruelty of hunting and to realize that it is also part of nature's way, and that even her beloved cat was a hunter. What sets this title apart from similarly themed books is Talbert's structuring of the plot. He sets the accident halfway through the book, leaving time to develop Ellie's change of heart and the consequences of her vengeful decision. The author also explores the idea of hunting, its place within nature, and the issue of pleasure associated with killing. How different, for example, is Troy's excitement at the thought of trapping coyotes from the way in which Ellie's cat used to maul mice and rabbits. Thoughtful, and even shocking in the scene when Fang is caught in the trap, this title provides much to think about.
