A little dog and his friends enjoy different activities for each season of the year

PreSThrough short sentences and dialogue bubbles, a mother dog and her pup describe what they do and see during each season. Here comes spring! The apple blossoms fly in the breeze. We do some work in the garden. Spring, summer, fall, and winter are each allotted three double-page spreads. Jewel-toned colors outlined in thick black lines will hold the attention of infants and toddlers for one-on-one sharing or storytime use. While there is no compelling story, the sweet illustrations carry the book. Fans of Eric Hills Spot series (Putnam) will appreciate this offering, as will preschool teachers who are always looking for books about the seasons.Lisa Falk, Los Angeles Public Library.

Readers journey through the seasons with puppies whose behavior resembles that of preschoolers. They dodge falling apple blossoms in spring, have a picnic with friends in summer, pick apples and jump in piles of leaves in fall, and have a snowball fight in winter. Murphy (Caterpillar's Wish, p. 454, etc.) captures the joy and surprises inherent in the arrival of the seasons, making this book a real heartwarmer. The bright coloring of her illustrations engages readers, as the puppies find a new adventure around every corner; the text is a terrific one to read a loud, subtly conveying with humor some time-honored lessons on ecology, sharing, and cooperation. In this appealing picture book, a little dog tells what it enjoys doing throughout the seasons. Among other activities, the pup and its genial mother dig in the garden, play at the park, rake leaves in the yard, and build a snow dog in winter. Broad black lines define the characters and settings, and bold colors brighten every simple scene. Cartoon-style speech balloons extend the short text. The canine characters, the affable tone, and the toddler sensibility make this book the perfect follow-up to Eric Hill's Spot series. Carolyn Phelan
