Take a close-up look at the story of farming--the rhythm of the seasons, the rearing of livestock, and the work of plowing, sowing, and harvesting. The history of the farm from its earliest days, the important roles of animals and machines, and the future of farming are explored with vivid photographs and fascinating facts.
Grade 4-8?Probably one of the better entries in the ever-growing series, Farm provides an interesting outline of the history of farming. The text, in typical fashion, features 29 double-page chapters. They cover a variety of topics such as the first farmers, various kinds of power and machines, foods, buildings, and farm animals. Lengthy captions describe the many detailed full-color illustrations, photographs, reproductions, and artifacts that are scattered around the pages. The text and illustrations have a definite European flavor. Readers in this country may find some of the illustrations a bit odd and misleading. The real value of this volume is the historical aspects of early methods, tools, and technology. This is not an essential purchase, but one that will enhance the agricultural science section of most libraries.?Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS
