In vier delen: 'Cultuurconflicten' (de tijd tot 1860), 'Verdrijving en verlies' (1780-1870), 'Oorlog tegen indianen' (1860-1900), en 'Opstanding en nieuw elan' (1900-heden) wordt een chronologisch overzicht gegeven. Ieder deel is onderverdeeld in korte hoofdstukken die elk uit twee delen bestaan: een inleiding over het onderwerp, gevolgd door een belichting van speciale zaken. Wat het boek zo interessant maak, is dat een en ander zeer uitgebreid geillustreerd is met foto's, voornamelijk zwart-wit, waarvan sommige tamelijk onbekend zijn. De ondertitel 'Een verhaal in foto's' wordt dan ook volledig waargemaakt.
